Bogie Overhaul - Update 9th September 2003
The last few months has seen major progress in the rebuild of a new set of bogies for 50026. This will be the first Class 50 in preservation to receive a completely new set of overhauled bogies.
The loco bogies are basically made up of the following major components:
cast bogie frames x 2 (ex 50001)
suspension frame or spider x 2 (ex 50001)
suspension tubes x 4 (ex 50001)
equalizing beams x 8 (ex 50001)
wheelsets x 6 (ex 50043)
EE538A traction motors x 6 (4 ex-50001, 2 ex-50045)
Power brake gear (ex 50001)
Brake cylinders x 12 (ex various Cl.37s and 50001)
Gear cases x 6 (ex 50001)
Here is the story so far as a series of pictures. Click on each picture to enlarge:
Jan 2003 - Bogies are recovered from 50001 at Booths scrapyard in Rotherham and
moved to Bicester site.
March 2003 - Bogies are stripped down into individual parts (about 1000 parts!).
Picture shows "spider" being lifted off.
Traction motors (2.2 tons each) are lifted off.
Bogie frame (about 3 tons) is lifted off.
Wheels ex-50001 are removed as only fit for scrap.

15-08-2003 - Wheelsets recovered from 50043 are excellent and have been cleaned
and repainted. One set has been set to Hunslett-Barclay for new bearings to be
fitted as existing ones had water corrosion damage.
15-08-2003 - Bogie frames are sandblasted to remove decades of corrosion and
brake dust.
15-08-2003 - One of the "spiders" after sandblasting.
15-08-2003 - Sandblasted gear cases and equalizing beams.
16-08-2003 - One of the bogie frames (upside down) is spray painted.
22-08-2003 - Bogies frame in top-coat of Spec 81 black gloss.
22-08-2003 - Suspension tubes and hangers having been sprayed with new paint.
22-08-2003 - Wheelsets (ex-50043) ready for fitting to overhauled frames (no.2
end).
22-08-2003 - Wheels fitted to overhauled frame.
30-08-2003 - Bogie 2 with wheels refitted.
05-09-2003 - Overhauled brake block holders (x24)
05-09-2003 - Overhauled power brake rigging.
05-09-2003 - Refurbished cab steps.
05-09-2003 - Refurbished suspension tubes and hangers.
05-09-2003 - Overhauled main suspension springs.
05-09-2003 - Overhauled brake cylinders (complete).
09-09-2003 - New spring seats with stainless steel plates and new rubber.
09-09-2003 - Even the bushes in the main bogie frame are being replaced.
09-09-2003 - End power-brake hangers and connecting rod in place.
09-09-2003 - No 2 bogie really taking shape.
17-09-2003 - Traction motor brush boxes after bead blasting using glass beads to
avoid damaging the brass.
